Yalda: Celebrating Winter Solstice at West Vancouver Memorial Library

Updated: Dec 26, 2024

West Vancouver – Thanks to our friends at West Vancouver Memorial Library, our dedicated teachers, and our exceptional students, we hosted a fun, family-friendly, and bilingual Yalda celebration for all!

The event featured arts, crafts, pomegranates, watermelon, poetry, games, and face painting, (and a delicious cake) creating a vibrant and engaging atmosphere for families.

Our skilled Educational Coordinator, Leila Raei, guided the program seamlessly. Students from Boundary, Braemar, Cedardale, Cleveland, Highlands, Pauline Johnson, and Queensbury Elementary Schools came together to share the story of Yalda, beautifully led by their teachers, Dr. Leila Sadeghi and Negin Soltani.

We were also fortunate to have the support of our amazing teachers, Elaheh and Farzaneh, and we extend a special thanks to Nafiseh for her stunning table design that captured the essence of Yalda.

A heartfelt thank-you to the West Vancouver Memorial Library team—Lise, Sarah, and Kate—for their countless hours of dedication in ensuring the event’s success.

Our talented graphic designer, Shadi, once again amazed us with her beautiful designs, from cakes and crafts to the event poster.

Yalda, the celebration of the longest night of the year, is a time for family, storytelling, and hope—a reminder that after the darkest night, light always prevails.

At Farsi dar BC, we believe that the rich heritage and humanity of our culture must be shared with our kids, and our neighbours where we live. The message of Yalda transcends borders and can bring people together through their mutual values.

May your hearts be full of light.

Happy [belated] Winter Solstice!

And don’t forget to check out the CBC News feature, highlighting Negin and Amir from Farsi dar BC.
